After their previous two more concept-based releases, David Gordon Trio Speaks Latin and Alexander Scriabin’s Ragtime Band – which was Mojo Magazine’s jazz CD of the year – the trio returns to its roots with a release entirely of original compositions from the pen of award-winning composer/pianist David Gordon. These nine tracks demonstrate a compositional tour de force, a highly empathic level of improvisation – featuring Oli Hayhurst on bass – allusions to the music of J.S. Bach and, in the title track, an inspired cry on the theme of the environment and nature-loss.

In the centenary year of Alexander Scriabin, the great piano poet-composer and mystic, the David Gordon Trio brings together diverse musical strands from the year 1915 to create an amazing tapestry of music from the time: boogie-woogie, tango and choro rub shoulders with the eponymous rag, which gets the makeover to end all makeovers, and with interpretations of Scriabin's miniatures - his billets-doux to eternity - seen through the prism of popular music of the time. David Gordon has been making heads turn for a while now as a harpsichordist of great invention. It is testament to him and recorder player Evelyn Nallen to have created this excellent quartet which also includes Richard Jefferies on double bass and percussionist Ichiro Tatsuhara (one of a few japanese bodhran players). Their sound brings in classical, irish traditional, samba and minimalist jazz and the end result is something not to be missed.
